Diana Oliveira, lawyer, Marta Watson LLP

Which of your cases makes you proudest of the result?

It’s finding a way through the most difficult files that another lawyer might not want to touch. Justice demands that all sides are vigorously represented. That’s fundamental to our profession.

What do you think the most important factor is in resolving a file?

Making sure that you can see the bigger picture. It is important to step back from the file to get a real appreciation of what the crux of the issue is so that a resolution is properly formulated around the real issue. I feel that this culminates in the best possible resolution. Whether the route is negotiation, mediation or trial.

What’s the most valuable lesson that your professional experience has taught you?

That you have to run every file as if it is going to proceed to trial. Each step in the litigation process needs to be carefully thought out with a view to trial.
