Jamal Rehman

Jamal’s developing practice is focused on civil and commercial litigation, with a focus on insurance defence and privacy. He is a strong advocate for his clients, and works to resolve disputes in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Which of your cases makes you proudest of the result?

Any time I resolve a dispute to my client’s satisfaction brings a sense of accomplishment. To be able to triage disputes at their outset and advise my clients throughout the litigation process while keeping them regularly informed is an element of lawyering I find truly satisfying. However, one matter that stands out as being particularly rewarding was assisting a prominent cosmetic company with the resolution of a cybersecurity breach they had suffered. I advised the client on the implementation of robust privacy measures that were in substantial compliance with applicable privacy legislation. I also advised the client on how to quantify and mitigate reputational damage they had suffered as a result.

What do you think the most important factor is in resolving a file?

The ability to see the forest for the trees. While it is critical, particularly at the outset of a dispute, to have a comprehensive and detailed understanding of all of the issues in dispute, it is thereafter critical to understand the key underlying positions and motivations of the parties from an empathetic perspective, as this more often than not lends itself to the efficient resolution of a dispute.

What’s the most valuable lesson that your professional experience has taught you?

While aggressive and haphazard lawyering looks good on TV, it certainly is not always conducive to dispute resolution. My professional experience has taught me that patient, reasonable, empathetic, and principled advocacy is a much more effective form of litigation that more naturally lends itself to resolving the majority of disputes.
